Fifty Shades of Grey screenwriter to pen fairytale film

Kelly Marcel, who has adapted EL James' racy novel for the big screen, is turning her hand to Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid

Forget bondage and bedroom antics, Fifty Shades of Grey’s screenwriter is set to turn her hand to a much more wholesome tale.

Kelly Marcel, who has been charged with turning domineering Christian Grey and innocent Anastasia Steele’s steamy S&M escapades into a film for the big screen, is going to write a script for Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid.

The Little Mermaid tells the story of a young mermaid you gives up her life under the sea when she falls for a human prince. The classic fairytale, which was first published in 1837 and has already been turned into an animated film by Disney, will be adapted by Atonement director Joe Wright for Working Title.

The Fifty Shades of Grey film is based on the bestselling novels by E L James. Universal have called the film a “priority”, saying the saucy film could be coming to a cinema near you by summer 2014
