Thousands of Radio Times readers voted for Educating Yorkshire, which followed the staff and pupils of Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

Accepting the Readers’ Choice Award, head teacher Jonny Mitchell joked about one of the perks of being nominated: “We are very privileged to be sitting here in London on the first Monday night after half term… and we’ll be staying here until Wednesday evening.”

Mr Mitchell also paid tribute to Ann Maguire, the Leeds teacher whose 16-year-old murderer was sentenced earlier that day:

“It’s been a difficult day for education. I want to pass out a dedication for Ann Maguire for everything she did for education and for keeping the spirit of education alive in the nation’s eyes.”

The shortlist for the Radio Times Readers’ Choice Award was drawn up by a panel of experts, including Radio Times critics, but the final result was chosen by readers of the magazine and visitors to RadioTimes.com.

Presenting the award, Radio Times editor Ben Preston said: “The Radio Times Readers’ Choice Award isn’t in the gift of the great and the good of the world’s documentary [industry] here tonight. It isn’t chosen by the select few. Instead the Radio Times award is voted for by real viewers, those thousands of discerning and discriminating Radio Times readers who have a passion for the programmes you all make.”

Host Sue Perkins took the chance to declare her love for the magazine: “I always get the Radio Times, I’m a massive fan of it,” she revealed. “There aren’t enough publications in the world where you can get a mail-order figurine and an article about what Jane McDonald keeps in her fridge.”

The Grierson Awards ceremony will be shown on Sky Atlantic, Friday 7th November at 11:10pm
