It was back in May that we first found out Charlotte Rampling was joining the cast of Broadchurch series two. But up until now her identity has remained a mystery, apart from a brief glimpse of her character walking along the beach with the Latimers in the first trailer.
I’d already speculated that she might be Mark’s mum, but I was wrong. Newly-released photos of the second series have revealed Rampling’s character name – Jocelyn Knight.
So, who is she? To the best of my memory, there was no mention of a Jocelyn Knight in the first series – but her name has appeared elsewhere…
If you read Broadchurch: the novel, you’ll have come across a special series two clue planted at the request of series creator Chris Chibnall.
“About three days before we went to press, Chris put in one tiny little clue about something that happens in series two,” author Erin Kelly told RadioTimes.com back in August. “He asked me to add it in, literally just as we had the proof all laid out ready to go to press.
“It’s something only the die-hards will pick up on but there’s one line quite early on in the book that won’t make sense to anybody. It’s something very playful that he did right at the last minute.”
We reckon we might have found that very clue. In chapter 12, David Tennant’s DI Alec Hardy is having a chat with Jack Marshall (David Bradley) who recalls seeing Danny Latimer having an argument with the postman:
“Around a quarter to eight, on a Wednesday morning. Up past Jocelyn Knight’s house. On the road leading up to the clifftops, near Linton Hill.”
So, Jocelyn is a resident of Broadchurch, living near the clifftops where Danny was murdered by Joe Miller – and near the site of Danny’s heated conversation, a plot thread that remained unresolved by Chibnall in series one.
Could she have had any involvement? Does she have any new information? Or is she part of an entirely separate storyline? Not long to wait until we find out…
Broadchurch series two begins on Monday 5th January
