James Acaster, Jessica Knappett, Kerry Godliman, Phil Wang and Rhod Gilbert, complete a series of tasks, including hitting a cricket ball with a croquet mallet and piling shoes on scales.
Taskmaster is, of course, a great improvement on panel shows, but this doesn’t mean it can’t share some of that old format’s strengths: routinely, the studio segments where the five comedians riff off the video clips and each other are the funniest bits.
So it is tonight, as James Acaster repeatedly scores bulleyes with rapidly calculated callbacks (in other words, references to things said earlier). They go down well with his fellow pros, and will do the same with comedy connoisseurs at home.
The improvised wit compensates for a clutch of relatively dull tasks, although one of them – you’ve got 20 minutes to cheer up this retired traffic warden, in that caravan – is a peach.
There are no live broadcasts scheduled for this show. But it is available via the streaming providers below.
