Idris Elba has been nominated for a Golden Globe even though Luther hasn’t even aired yet. How?

We haven't seen John Luther's two-part return, yet Elba has already secured a spot on the Golden Globe best actor shortlist

Sounds like we really should tune in to Luther when it starts next Tuesday 15th December. Even though the series hasn’t even aired yet, Idris Elba has already bagged a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in the BBC drama.

The actor has been nominated for a best actor award in a limited TV series, along with Mark Rylance for his performance in Wolf Hall, Oscar Isaac for Show Me a Hero, David Oyelowo for Nightingale and Patrick Wilson for Fargo.

Luther series four begins in the UK on Tuesday 15th December on BBC1, with the concluding part scheduled for a week later on Tuesday 22n December.

In the US, the show will air as one single TV movie on Thursday 17th of December on BBC America.

That air date is important – it means that it scrapes in to the eligibility period for the 2016 Golden Globes, which accepts shows from 1st January to 31st December 2015.

Elba has also earned a second Golden Globe nod for his role in Netflix film Beasts of No Nation.

Do Elba and Luther deserve their place? Guess we’ll find out on 15th December at 9pm on BBC1.
