Brace yourselves, folks. Here’s your very first look at Downton series six – and it brings us the sort of deliciously sharp-tongued bickering we’ve come to expect when Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess and Isobel Crawley (Penelope Wilton) come to blows over village life.
The issue in question is the village hospital and whether or not it should be run by a local board or the Royal Yorkshire County Hospital. It’s important stuff, and the two-minute scene delivers plenty of tension as Isobel’s two suitors – Dr Richard Clarkson and Lord Merton – stake their allegiance in their latest attempt to win over Matthew’s mother (with limited success, might we add).
The scene comes to us ahead of the series six trailer which was shown at the Edinburgh TV festival earlier this week and is expected to be made public over the weekend.
The sixth and final series of Downton is headed for screens this autumn with eight new episodes plus a Christmas special in which the Crawley family will bid farewell after five years on screens.
