#DuchessatDownton: what happened when Kate visited the set of Downton Abbey?

There were bunches of flowers, toy trains, personalised cakes, boot polish and a group photo when the Duchess of Cambridge visited the ITV drama at Ealing Studios in West London

Forget scandalous princes, high-born dukes and Dowager Countesses (however quick-witted), Downton Abbey welcomed a truly special guest today.

The Duchess of Cambridge graced the set with her presence this morning, dropping by Ealing Studios in West London, where scenes in the servants quarters and Violet’s house are filmed.

We like to think the pregnant royal, who is a self-confessed fan of the hit period drama, was excited about her trip. But we know the cast and crew were most definitely looking forward to their famous guest…

The Duchess of Cambridge arrived, looking suitably glam.

Mrs Patmore had baked a cake for the occasion.

While Carson clearly had something to do with this pristine spread…

George Crawley presented the princess with flowers.

Before the heavily pregnant royal met the show’s writer and creator Julian Fellowes, and exec producer Gareth Neame. Fingers crossed she snared some series six spoilers.

Here the Duchess is looking around behind the scenes – and having a quick chinwag with Carson in a trailer.

She then headed over to watch a scene being filmed. Apparently her headphones are customised with the letters HRH. Naturally.

Fans kept their fingers crossed that Kate would step in front of the camera.

Or get up to some royal mischief…

We had our own set of hopes and wishes for the royal’s day on set. But instead Kate went to hang out with Lady Mary and Anna Bates.

That was when Twitter got a little overexcited…

All the while, Mr Bates was waiting patiently for Kate’s arrival…

This was also pretty exciting…

Soon it was time to move on. Mosley and Baxter were waiting in the wings, boot polish at the ready…

Plus she had to fit in time for a group photo with the cast.

AND pick up a present to take home for Prince George.

All in all, a pretty productive trip, we think you’ll agree.
