Suranne Jones to star in new BBC1 medical drama Doctor Foster

The Scott and Bailey actor will play a GP alongside Bertie Carvel

Suranne Jones is set to star in a new prime-time medical drama for BBC1.

The Scott & Bailey star will play the lead in Doctor Foster, a five-parter for BBC1 about a popular GP who believes her husband is having a secret affair. Actor Bertie Carvel has been cast as her husband Simon, and the script is by The Town writer Mike Bartlett.

Jones said, “It’s about looking at one woman’s story and asking, ‘What if that was me? What would I do in that situation? And the age-old question of why.’ I am very much looking forward to telling Gemma Foster’s story.”

The latest series of Scott & Bailey aired on ITV in September 2014. Jones’s co-star Amelia Bullmore told Radio Times she was unsure about the show’s future, saying, “I don’t think things should go on for ever and ever.”
