Dowager swoons after Clooney kiss in Downton Abbey charity sketch

Maggie Smith pulls off a “very comedy fall” reveals co-star Laura Carmichael as Clooney joins ITV drama for one-off Christmas special

The Dowager Countess of Grantham is set to swoon after Hollywood hunk George Clooney plants a kiss on her in charity Downton Abbey sketch.

One would perhaps think the Dowager, played by Maggie Smith, would greet Mr Clooney with this sort of expression…

But given it’s all for ITV’s Text Santa charity campaign, it seems Violet’s stiff upper lip leaves the building (if only for a moment).

“There is a very brilliant moment with Maggie and George – and I don’t know if I want to give away any more than that really – but Maggie does a very comedy fall,” co-star Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith, tells This Morning.

“George plants a kiss and Maggie ends up on the floor, it’s wonderful. He was hilarious.”

The cast themselves could hardly believe Mr Clooney was joining them on set.

“We were filming away and then heard, ‘He’s here, he’s here, he’s arrived’. But he was wonderful and so brilliant and I’m very excited for everyone to see it.”

Exact details around Clooney’s part remain shrouded in secrecy, but it’s thought he’s an American guest at a wedding being held at the estate.

Downton Abbey series 5 starts Sunday at 9:00pm on ITV
