Downton Abbey: Branson and Sarah Bunting are “kindred spirits”

But is romance on the cards for the former chauffeur and Downton's school teacher?

There’s no denying there’s a connection between Tom Branson and Downton Abbey’s new school teacher Sarah Bunting, but is romance on the cards for the pair in series five?

Well, we’re not too sure.

According to Allen Leech, who plays Sybil’s widower Branson, the pair are more like “kindred spirits” than lovers.

Though he also reckons Branson might be more open to a love story this year.

“For Tom he’s definitely coming out of mourning for Sybil,” Leech told RadioTimes.com at the launch of the hit ITV period drama’s fifth series. “Whether or not he’ll find romance this series will be interesting.”

“In Sarah Bunting he finds someone who is more a kindred spirit than seeing her in a romantic way,” he continued. “She reminds him of himself when he first arrived at Downton and if anything it’s more a friendship where he hopes he can educate her rather than anything romantic.”

“Or he’s giving you a curve ball and it’s not that,” interrupted Leech’s co-star Rob James Collier, who plays scheming footman Thomas.

So, erm, yeah. Who knows? We guess we’ll have to watch series five to find out…
