Downton Abbey’s Daisy set to play Cinderella’s ugly sister

Sophie McShera is tipped to star alongside fellow Downton star Lily James in Disney's Cinderella remake

Poor downtrodden Daisy.

After that sham marriage to dying William and an unrequited crush on series three’s new footman, surely it’s her turn to find true love? All that pottering about in the kitchen would doubtlessly make her the perfect candidate to play Disney’s Cinders… Isn’t it about time Downton’s kitchen maid got her crystal slipper on?

But no. Daisy – or more accurately Sophie McShera, the actress who plays her – has instead been lined up for the role of Cinderella’s ugly sister in Disney’s new live-action version of the classic fairytale, according to The Hollywood Reporter, while a fellow Downton cast member has been cast as Cinders herself. Ouch.

Downton newbie Lily James, who plays rebellious, jazz-loving Lady Rose in the ITV period drama, is set to get the the pretty dresses, the fairy godmother and Prince Charming while McShera will be left playing her bitter, mean and ugly sister.

The Borgias’ Holliday Grainger has been cast as Cinderella’s other step-sister, with Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother, while Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden will fill Prince Charming’s royal boots.

Disney’s new Cinderella adaptation will be directed by Kenneth Branagh and is said to be inspired by Tim Burton’s 2010 live action remake of Alice in Wonderland.
