Eddie Redmayne lined up to play Stephen Hawking in new biopic

The Les Miserables star is poised to follow in Benedict Cumberbatch's footsteps to play the iconic physicist in biopic Theory of Everything

Les Miserables star Eddie Redmayne is set to take up the role of Stephen Hawking in a new biopic.

The 31-year-old actor, who played Marius in the big screen adaptation of Victor Hugo’s book, is in line to star in Theory of Everything as the celebrated British physicist.

Theory of Everything, which is directed by Man on Wire’s James Marsh,  is expected to cover the period of the time after the scientist’s diagnosis and focus on his relationship with his first wife, Jane, rather than his scientific acheivements.

Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 1962 at the age of 21 while he was studing at Cambridge.

The British physicist has most notably been portrayed on screen by Benedict Cumberbatch in BBC’s 2004 film Hawking. The TV series was set during the early 1960s while Hawking studied at Cambridge. The scientist has also guest starred as himself in The Big Bang Theory, The Simpsons, Futurama and Star Trek: The Next Generation.
