Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

A fearsome company boss gets zapped into her nerdy 13-year-old self in this fanciful comedic blend of Big and The Devil Wears Prada. Humiliation at middle school helped make Jordan Sanders (Regina Hall) a wealthy tech-sector magnate, who's relentlessly horrible to her long-suffering assistant (Issa Rae), not to mention closed-off and controlling in her personal life. But she's forced to reassess her outlook after insulting a dreamy teenager, who, at the wave of a magic wand, puts the 38-year-old back inside her pubescent self (played by newcomer Marsai Martin). While the body-swap aspect is somewhat arbitrary in execution, there are life lessons aplenty here about resisting peer pressure, believing in yourself and not being a bully. Hall stomps around energetically in diva mode, Rae's a likeable underdog, and Martin proves disarmingly precocious. As the plot grinds predictably through the motions, however, genuine laughs are thin on the ground, and what should have been a fizzing entertainment turns disappointingly flat.
