Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Alicia Vikander takes over the Lara Croft mantle from Angelina Jolie with negligible success in Norwegian director Roar Uthaug's movie reboot of the video-game franchise. In this origins tale, Lara follows the clues given by her presumed-dead father (Dominic West) to a mysterious Japanese island where a legendary sorceress lies buried. There, she falls into the clutches of mercenary Walton Goggins, who needs the secrets held within the coffin for a sinister organisation known as the Order of Trinity. The urban grittiness of Lara's London lifestyle soon gives way to cliché as she enters more exotic surrounds, with our reluctant heiress dodging as many plot holes as darkly lit booby traps. With its banal exposition, routine swashbuckling and CGI-swathed derring-do, this is essentially a puffed-up throwback to the B-movies of old - and even more of an Indiana Jones clone than the first two films put together.
