Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This origin story for Disney's dalmatian-napper makes for a devilishly entertaining and immaculately styled caper. Set predominantly in London during the punk era of the 1970s, it sees Emma Stone's orphaned grifter blossom into a villain when she goes to work for aristocratic fashion guru the Baroness (Emma Thompson), who exploits Cruella's talent as a designer and has a link to her past. Making the most of a snappy script, director Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) gives the story a gorgeously macabre look and plenty of rock 'n' roll swagger, as Cruella and her sidekicks Jasper and Horace (Joel Fry and Paul Walter Hauser) get up to all manner of mischief. Stone effectively evokes the iconic animated take on de Vil (originally the creation of author Dodie Smith) with her expressive performance, becoming increasingly wild-eyed, husky and stooped as events unfold, while a deliciously withering Thompson proves more than her match. There are a few Joker-like moments that threaten to take Cruella into more tortured territory, but it ends up falling down firmly on the side of fun.
