Downton Abbey’s Maggie Smith in first My Old Lady trailer

The new dramatic comedy sees the Dowager ditch the bonnet and reach for a walking stick, but she's no frail old lady...

She might be swapping her brocade Downton gowns for some less fancy getup and ageing 15 years, but 79-year-old Maggie Smith’s screen presence looks to be as arresting as ever in this trailer for her new film, My Old Lady.

Adapted from Israel Horovitz’s play, the comedy-drama charts the story of penniless New Yorker Mathias Gold (played by Kevin Kline) who moves to Paris to claim an apartment willed to him by his estranged father.

But Mathias arrives to find the apartment comes with two unexpected occupants – his father’s 94-year-old former lover Mathilde Girard (Maggie Smith), and her daughter Chloé (Kristin Scott Thomas). And from the looks of it, domestic bliss doesn’t figure in the equation, thanks to Mathilde’s difficult ways.

This first look at My Old Lady certainly promises the full package of laughs, gasps, and perhaps a few tears. Plus, we reckon you can expect a performance from Maggie that Downton’s quick-witted Countess Dowager herself would approve of.

See for yourself…
