Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

In a made-for-TV re-imagining of the hugely popular Patrick Swayze dance drama, Abigail Breslin takes the lead as "Baby", an unassuming young woman whose life is shaken and stirred when she meets the hip-shaking Johnny Castle (Colt Prattes) while on holiday with her parents. Despite a much longer running time, this interpretation knows all the steps, but executes them with none of the passion that made the 1987 original so enduring. Certain expansions on the story, such as tension in the marriage of "Baby's" parents, slow down the film to a crawl, while a changed ending adds an unexpected decade-later twist to one of the most romantic of fantasies. Breslin is more fleshed-out as the teenage heroine, but neither she nor Prattes look like they're having the time of their life when on screen together, resulting in a disappointing affair that only die-hard fans will probably accept.
