The BBC this morning unveiled a brand-new Doctor Who logo, which will accompany Matt Smith's on-screen debut as the Time Lord in spring 2010. The logo is the 11th to have been used on screen in the show's history.

Doctor Who's new lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat called the new design, "simple and beautiful, and most important of all, a completely irresistible doodle," and joked "I apologise to school notebooks everywhere because in 2010 that's what they're going to be wearing."

For a closer look at the new design, and to compare it with some of those from previous series, check out our gallery of Doctor Who logos. Then post a comment below and share your thoughts.

I always preferred the name in two lines like this, rather than the recent 'goldfish' one (which also wouldn't look out of place atop a black cab). The additional 'DW' motif is a tad superfluous methinks, and wreaks of mere 'branding' rather than trying to capture a mood with a good design. I always liked the very first opening title - noticeably absent from the logos gallery(!) - which was distinctly unfussy/untrendy and didn't distract from the fantastic original visuals and music. I thought the move away from the spooky 'howlaround' visuals & musique concrete sounds towards the generic 'spacescape' and off-the shelf synth generated muzak helped no end toward the general decline of the old series. But then, the eighties had a lot to answer for...

Not sure that i care for it too much. Depends really how it looks when its worked in with the opening/closing credits I think. It comes across as having been deliberately designed to grab an as yet untouched corner of the merchandising market, that of the die-cast lapel badge or, god-forbid, the blazer breast pocket sow-on badge - well any badgy thing really! It won't be long before we see them everywhere. As regards it being the 11th logo for the 11th Doctor, well its stretching it a bit to say the last one had been two designs when it was actually the same design given a revamp and to be honest, I never noticed until it was brought up - can anyone else honestly say they did - honestly?

Oh no no no no NO! That is awful! The DW is so cheesy! First Russell T Davies leaves, then David Tennant (nooooo!) and now theyre changing the logo?! What on earth are they thinking?!

Who cares? (no pun intended). I care about the quality of the programme, not the branding!

I really don't like the new logo, its all to do with the BBC's terrible rebranding decisions, which has also including closing down the classic Doctor Who Museum in Blackpool and disowning all things classic or as the BBC prefer, "OLD". more in this at www.DoctorWhoBlackpool.com

Honestly? I'd have to see how it's used in the title sequence before giving it a pass.

At first I thought it was quite tacky but its starting to grow on me, im not sure if i like it or not. I do like the insigma and the retro kind of design but it does look a tad tacky and too much like the 80's logo's just when the show started to go down hill. GOOD NEW LOGO???

It reminds me of the awful Seventh Doctor design that was chunky and cartoonish. I hated that one and this one isn't much better, in my opinion. Aimed squarely at kids, it would seem.

The DW looks like a birthday cake with one candle on top.

What a miserable bunch you are! Where is your excitement? It's fresh, new and at the end of the day it's only a logo and one of the best so far - get over yourselves!

I never much liked the orange one much, so this is an improvement. I like the retro look. I don't see why they need to change it at all though, enough will be different in the new series already.

I'm sorry, I don't like it. A doodle is right, and that's what it should be - a passing scribble. Leave the logo as it is, it's fine like that!

I like it a lot. I've witnessed logos change since I started watching Doctor Who back in '81. It's new, interesting and here to stay.

I like it, a fresh and dynamic regenerated logo for a new Doctor. Out with the old in with the new. The old logo was fantastic a lot of exciting TV associated with it. I'm sure the BBC will not dissapoint us as the Dr. Who team are the best in the buisness. Can't wait.

Oh, dear! Has Blue Peter been holding a design competition?

The number of things that are wrong with it are astounding - blocky, unclear font, muddy colour that'll be difficult to replicate in printing, and basically a total lack of originality.

Well I really like it! The more I see it, the more it grows on me. And it is simple and beautiful. In fact it is very retro, a nice twist between the orginal simple logos and the the TV movie Logo, and all for a New Era..series 5 here I come, after hopefully what will be a fantastic end to the current era.

Great! Now let's get to work on the theme tune. Maybe replace it with Girls Aloud or, even better, The Saturdays

Was this designed by the winner of a competition for primary school children ? I'd hate to think an adult was actually paid for it.

As a graphic designer, I feel that you have created 2 separate logos where only one is adequate for product branding of this sort. It is as though a decision couldn't be made and the BBC plumped for both. Sorry to be on a further downer, but I feel that both logos lack the dynamic factor behind the new Doctor Who image and appear a little flat.

not good in a texting age :the average 5 year-old can better this latest effort. Without the Doctor Who at left, or the police phonebox light on-top the logo would make no sense. Dr? (c) is already better

A new Doctor Who logo is not a matter of great importance, what is in the episodes is what is watched.

I will be interested to know how Karen Gillan came to be dressed as a uniformed police officer in a mini skirt. I hope that and the logo are not indicative of style over substance.

what do I think of this logo? Not a lot! Are the large letters supposed to be a DW or something?
