Downton Abbey’s Lesley Nicol: scripts for series six are “wonderful”

The actress who plays the Abbey's cook Mrs Patmore tells us Julian Fellowes' ideas for season six are "really interesting"

The cast of Downton Abbey have seen five brand new scripts which means they’re sitting on the secrets of five whole episodes

We caught up with Lesley Nicol, who plays the Crawley’s cook Mrs Patmore, at last night’s Radio Times Covers Party in London and she was quick to tell us that the wheels are already in motion for series six of the hit ITV period drama.

“The exciting news is we’re at read-throughs on Monday and Tuesday,” she told us, adding that she’s already got her hands on the scripts, full of delicious new storylines: “I’ve been sent five, which is very exciting.”

“I haven’t read them all yet,” she admitted, showcasing some impressive self-restraint. “I’ve just come back from America, like three days ago with my husband, two dogs, many suitcases… you have to do the laundry and all of that rubbish!”

The one she has read, though, was “like reading a wonderful book. It’s a wonderful read,” she tells us.

Any shocks or surprises? We asked, hopefully…

“Now you know if there were any surprises I wouldn’t be the one telling you! What I’m saying is it all looks really interesting. They are all great. They are great stories.”

What can we say? We tried!
