Co-written by Game of Thrones author George RR Martin, Elden Ring is a souls-like that has stuck in the minds of gamers despite being released more than two years ago.

With brutally challenging combat and a stunningly designed gothic environment to explore, Elden Ring surpassed expectations - and as of February, it has sold 23 million copies around the world.

But the game’s deep lore does not end with the 2022 smash hit, as there is more to come from this gloriously grizzly world.

A new expansion called Shadow of the Erdtree is due to launch imminently, so it is time to shake off the rust and sharpen your blade.

Curious? Let's take a deeper look at the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

Will there be Elden Ring DLC?

Yes! It was confirmed that Elden Ring will receive a major post-launch DLC expansion named Shadow of the Erdtree.

Publishers Bandai Namco and developers FromSoftware announced the news on Tuesday 28th February 2023, posting on Twitter (now X) and the official Bandai Namco website.

As you can see in the official tweet below, some ominous concept art was revealed with the news that an expansion "is currently in development".

The official post teasingly said: "Rise, Tarnished, and let us walk a new path together... We hope you look forward to new adventures in the Lands Between."

And now we have a trailer, which we'll share at the bottom of this page!

When is the Elden Ring DLC release date?

The Elden Ring DLC release date is 21st June 2024, the developers have confirmed.

As we learned from the epic new trailer, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree will drop on that date for Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4 and PC.

That's less than four months from the time of writing! If you think that's a long time, then why not return to the base game in preparation?

What will the Elden Ring DLC be about?

The trailer reveals lore and characters that both hearken back to the base game and include plenty of new elements.

The arm of Miquella (brother of Melania) hangs from the cocoon in the arena we fought Mohg (fans predicted he'd be involved), and plenty of other bosses are briefly showcased.

There's also a new villain called Mesmer to look forward to.

In a recent interview with IGN, director Hidetaka Miyazaki had plenty to tell us about the upcoming DLC.

"The setting of Shadow of the Erdtree is a brand new land," he said. "It's a brand new map separate from the Lands Between. It is a land that is overshadowed by the particular Shadow of the Erdtree as opposed to the Erdtree in the Lands Between.

"And it takes place, again, on an entirely separate, physically separate map."

So it's confirmed that we'll be treated to a whole new map!

And in reply to the idea of there being any more DLCs in the future, he said: "We don't want to say this is the end of the Elden Ring saga for now."

Exciting times!

Will Shadow of the Erdtree DLC be free?

As Shadow of the Erdtree is described as an expansion, we're expecting big things from the DLC – and this won't come free.

It will cost £34.99, and you'll be able to grab a collector's edition too!

Can we pre-order Shadow of the Erdtree DLC?

As we know the price, you won't be surprised to hear that you can indeed now pre-order Shadow of the Erdtree!

It's available on Steam, the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft’s Xbox store.

An edition that compiles the original game plus the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is also available to pre-order at Amazon.

Is there a Shadow of the Erdtree trailer?

As we've mentioned many times already, yes, there is a Shadow of the Erdtree trailer! Check it out below:
