Definitive proof that Downton Abbey would be dreadful without English accents

Think the Dowager Countess would be just as witty with a Southern drawl? Think again...

Lady Mary, Branson and Lord Grantham have ditched their plummy British accents, opting to do a scene from the iconic period drama in American tones instead.

And it’s definitive proof that without their clipped upper-class voices, the show would be an entirely different beast.

Michelle Dockery, Allen Leech and Hugh Bonneville dropped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on their US press tour, and he suggested that the show’s popularity across the pond was down to the characters’ terribly British way of speaking.

To test this theory the stars then proceeded to act out a scene from the show, in American accents instead. The result is hilarious, but also deeply disturbing and a lot less classy…

Downton Abbey concludes on Christmas Day at 8:45pm on ITV
