As filming on Downton Abbey comes to a close – there are a mere two weeks left before production shuts down for good – the cast and crew are getting a little misty-eyed about the years they’ve spent together making one of the most popular TV dramas in recent years.

Key cast members, including Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern and Joanne Froggatt, are currently in the US taking part in the TCA press tour – and during their panel talk quickly turned to the thing they’d all miss most about Downton Abbey.

“I will miss the peace of it,” said McGovern, who has played Cora Crawley since the show’s inception. “I miss this world where everybody knew their place and life seemed so quiet by comparison. In today’s world we contend with much more information than we can actually absorb and handle in our emotional development and it produces a low-grade anxiety all the time.

“In the world of Downton Abbey we only know the circle that is in front of our face and know our job and place, and how to behave. And there are limits to that life, of course, but it’s peaceful.”

Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, gave a more light-hearted answer to the question, admitting that she’ll miss Lady Mary’s well-stocked vintage wardrobe. And Penelope Wilton (Isobel Crawley) was in agreement: “When you had a dress made, it was made for you. You had fewer things, but when it was made, it was tailor-made.”

Dockery’s on-screen sister Laura Carmichael revealed she’d love to take her newspaper office set home with her, while Phyllis Logan, aka Mrs Hughes, said she’d miss the Abbey’s impressive floral arrangements.

Hugh Bonneville didn’t say what he’d personally miss, but instead told journalists the main lesson he’d learned during filming: “People who smoke cigarettes are up to no good.”
