It’s Christmas already as the cast of Call the Midwife start filming

Cameras have started rolling on season five of the hit BBC1 period drama as Trixie, Shelagh and Doctor Turner celebrate "another Christmas in May"

Don’t let the sunshine and cloudless blue sky fool you, we are actually in the depths of winter. ‘Tis the season to deck those halls, put up paper chains and sing carols around the tree. Or, it is in Poplar at least, where the nuns and midwives of Nonnatus House are celebrating Christmas.

After their festive read-through last week the cast and crew of Call the Midwife were on set yesterday as the cameras starting rolling on the show’s much-anticipated yuletide special.

Trixie, Shelagh and Doctor Turner were spotted in a suitably decked out clinic.

While star Stephen McGann took to Twitter to celebrate “another Christmas in May” – and give fans a sneak peek of this year’s Christmas tree.

Main, who stars as Shelagh in the long-running period drama, was quick to say what a “lovely first day back” she’d had…

… while Helen George, aka Trixie, celebrated the day in true Nonnatus style. Sister Monica Joan would be proud.

The star, who recently ran the London marathon, also posted on Instagram earlier in the week, revealing how she was preparing for the show’s early festive celebrations.
