Luckily they weren’t actually going head-to-head, with BBC1’s Call the Midwife starting an hour earlier at 8:00pm, so for some that meant a whole evening dedicated to vintage dresses and retro dramas. Not that Call the Midwife’s second instalment was all rose-tinted 60s charm…

It was a tough storyline…

But it is what we’ve come to expect from the BBC1 drama:

We also saw the arrival of another new Nonnatus nurse – Phyllis Crane – played by Linda Bassett.

While Patsy’s new relationship stirred up a reaction in the Twittersphere:

Over on ITV, Mr Selfridge was back for its third series. And clearly fans and stars alike were glad for its return…

It was a sad opening episode, though, beginning with Harry burying his wife Rose.

Some people were left more perplexed than moved by the leap forward in time…

But luckily there was a wedding or two to perk everyone up…

It wasn’t all period drama on the box last night. Top Gear was back on BBC2 with the first episode since that controversial trip to Argentina…
