Congratulations, it’s series four. Bravo, old thing.

We’ve waited patiently for nine whole months, and we’ve been rewarded mightily. First, by an emotional festive special, and now with an entire eight-episode series of Call the Midwife, starting on Sunday 18th January at 8:00pm.

We’ve already taken a look at the new nurses joining Nonnatus, as well as had a sneaky peak at episode one. But now those jolly chaps over at BBC1 have given us a trailer to ponder over.

As usual there are lots of brand new babies and stiff upper lips, but the 40-second clip also reveals tears, pain and social scandal. We get a glimpse of Nurse Barbara Gilbert’s (Charlotte Ritchie) arrival in Poplar – and her first attempt to ride a bicycle over cobbles.

Nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett) also makes an appearance to comfort a distressed Barbara while steely sister Evangelina suffers with an unknown pain and the midwives deal with a difficult birth.

The trailer even features a little glimpse of Downton Abbey alumnus Cara Theobold (aka kitchenmaid Ivy Stuart). She’s swapped the Abbey’s kitchens for Poplar and a role playing a pregnant mum who finds out her husband has been “caught with another man”…

But the most exciting news of all? Is that an engagement ring we spy, Trixie?
