Kay Mellor’s In the Club is getting a second series. The BBC1 baby drama – following a group of expectant mothers who meet at antenatal classes – debuted in August, reaching a peak of five million viewers, and is based in part on Mellor’s own experience of teenage motherhood.
Starring Hermione Norris, Jill Halfpenny, Katherine Parkinson and Will Mellor, the series charted six mums-to-be as they dealt with impending childbirth, plus a whole heap of extra stress, including adultery, bankruptcy and the threat of prison.
Kay Mellor – best known for writing Fat Friends and The Syndicate – said of the recommission, “On a personal note, the whole experience from script to screen was such a positive one for me. It’s going to be a bit of a juggling process as I’d love to bring all the characters back but I also want to introduce some new stories. One thing’s for sure, I can’t wait to start the whole process again.”
BBC1 controller Charlotte Moore added, “BBC1 viewers really took the characters to their hearts and it was exciting to see the show build across the six episodes. Kay Mellor’s story about a group of pregnant women celebrated life in all its joy and tragedy and I’m looking forward to the delivery of series two.”
Filming in series two will begin in Leeds in 2015 with a new six-part series headed for BBC1 later in the year.
