US TV hit Elementary appears to have a thing for British actors… First they cast Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes, then Natalie Dormer was signed up as Irene Adler. Rhys Ifans took on the role of Sherlock’s brother Mycroft, and Sean Pertwee played former Scotland Yard cop Gareth Lestrade. Even Vinnie Jones made an appearance. And it doesn’t end there…
Now English actress Ophelia Lovibond has joined the series as recurring character Kitty Winter – Sherlock’s protégé and a rival to her predecessor Joan (played by Lucy Liu).
While it is still unknown why she teams up with the detective, their new partnership will have ongoing repercussions for his relationship with Joan, according to TVLine. The second series finale saw Sherlock take a job back in the UK with MI6 after Watson moved out of his house, making it likely that he and Kitty will first encounter one another on this side of the pond.
Lovibond has previously been seen in films Nowhere Boy and Mr Popper’s Penguins and most recently appeared in Sky Atlantic’s Mr Sloane opposite Olivia Colman and Nick Frost. Next up is a role in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy alongside Karen Gillan, Chris Pratt and Bradley Cooper.
Series three of Elementary begins in America on 30 October and is shown in the UK on Sky Atlantic.
