Breaking Bad and Mad Men production team film grizzly TV drama in York

Knifeman, starring Rev. actor Tom Hollander, is currently underway in the ancient town

The creators of  Breaking Bad and Mad Men are currently shooting a new drama, set in 18th century London, in the old walled city of York.

New AMC series Knifeman is inspired by Wendy Moore’s biography of John Hunter, and will follow the story of a controversial chap named John Tattersal, who performs operations in his unlicensed home theatre.

Pirates of the Caribbean actor Tom Hollander will take on the lead role of the pioneering, organ harvesting medic. Hollander will be joined by Gavin and Stacey actress Joanna Page and Atonement actor Daniel Mays in the drama.

Historical, cobbled areas, including Shambles and Chapter House Street, will double for old London. Cast and crew will continue shooting until 9pm today.

“York is fast becoming the go-to location for high quality period dramas such as this,” explained Knifeman location manager Matt Bowden to YorkMix.

“I was born and bred in York so it’s great to see these streets used in something like this,” he continued.

Knifeman director Brian Percival is recognisable for his 2013 movie The Book Thief as well as episodes of Downton Abbey.

A Knifeman pilot is expected to be released in late 2014/early 2015.
