Silent Witness stars Emilia Fox, Richard Lintern and David Caves reveal all about the new series

The hit crime drama returns in January 2014 with new boss Dr Thomas Chamberlain making his debut following the death of Dr Leo Dalton

Forensic crime drama Silent Witness is to return for its 17th series on Thursday 2 January at 9pm with regulars Emilia Fox, David Caves and Liz Carr joined by Richard Lintern as new Lyell Centre boss Dr Thomas Chamberlain.

Pathologist Nikki Alexander will once again be working alongside scientist Jack Hodgson and examiner Clarissa Mullery, with Lintern (whose previous credits include The Shadow Line and Endeavour) making his debut following the departure of William Gaminara, whose character Leo Dalton was killed off at the end of the previous run of episodes.

Writer Tim Prager reveals that the five two-part dramas that make up this latest series “range from extortion that leads to murder; Nikki’s pursuit of the truth that frees a convicted killer; a trip to Scotland to investigate a violent death; and the hunt for a baby that ends with Jack’s confrontation with his troubled past”.

Silent Witness began life in 1996 as a vehicle for Amanda Burton, whose character Sam Ryan featured in the first eight series. Current star Emilia Fox has been the lead actor since 2004. Ratings for the most recent series topped 7 million for the majority of its run.
