We always knew BBC1’s headline Christmas drama was going to be pretty glam. With a cast including Matthew Rhys as Darcy, Anna Maxwell Martin playing his devoted wife Elizabeth and Doctor Who’s Jenna Coleman as her sister, Lydia – not to mention a mansion that seduced fiery Lizzie Bennet – Death Comes to Pemberley looks set to be essential festive viewing.
The first trailer released for the television adaptation of PD James’ murder mystery, set six years after Lizzie and Darcy’s marriage, is packed full of famous faces (Matthew Goode, Rebecca Front and Penelope Wilton also make up the starry cast) and features Chatsworth House standing in as the Darcys’ magnificent Pemberley home.
PD James’s story picks up six years after Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice concluded, at the scene of a Pemberley ball which is dramatically interrupted by a murder, with Wickham (Goode) identified as the main suspect. If he’s found guilty, he’ll hang – much to the evident distress of his outspoken wife, Lydia, played by Jenna Coleman. Meanwhile, the Darcy household are embroiled in the scandalous murder investigation which threatens to shatter everything they hold dear.
But while murder and salacious gossip threaten to engulf all at Pemberley, by the looks of the trailer there’s plenty of room for amorous moments between one of literature’s most celebrated couples…
