Yes, you read that correctly. This really is happening.
Ex-Atomic Kitten Kerry Katona is set to swap Iceland’s supermarket aisles for the stage as she takes on the role of one of Hollywood’s most revered stars Marilyn Monroe.
The 32-year-old pop star turned tabloid favourite will appear as the iconic film actress in Norma Jeane: The Musical, the story of Monroe’s life, at a theatre in central London. The venue’s identity is beign kept under warps for the time being.
The star, who recently filed for bankruptcy for the second time in five years, was apparently top of writer Belvedere Pashun’s list for the part: “I needed an actor of huge talent, personality and experience – Kerry was at the top of my list.
“Marilyn’s life was one of extremes – poverty, abandonment, abuse followed by a flowering beauty which brought attention, fame, wealth and power and then the well documented tragic fall,” he continued. “This show will change the shape of people’s perceptions of Marilyn Monroe, and we expect to announce a new star of drama on stage and screen with Kerry’s performance.”
Katona, who like Monroe has been married multiple times and struggled with depression and addiction, said: “A successful career in drama has always been a main goal of mine and this role is a challenge but one I’m going to grab with both hands.”
We shall see. But Monroe herself did once say: “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.”
Let’s just hope Katona’s costume department are up to the job…
