With a steely stare and a hint of grey, Dominic West looks out on the world as Richard Burton as a BBC4 drama recreates the actor’s last hurrah with his former wife Elizabeth Taylor.
Helena Bonham-Carter plays the role of Taylor in the drama which follows the pair’s real life stint in a 1983 Broadway production of Noel Coward’s Private Lives.
In the play they starred as a divorced couple who meet by chance on honeymoon with their new partners – but things go massively awry off stage as well.
Directed by Richard Laxton, the 90-minute film is likely to air on BBC4 later this year and is expected to be last of the channel’s trademark biopics – at least for the time being.
The real life Burton and Taylor were married between 1964 and 1974 and then again between 1975 and 1976. But their final reunion on the set of Private Lives is said to have convinced both actors to finally call time on any prospect of getting back together.
Burton passed away a year after the 1983 play, aged just 58, while Taylor died from heart failure in March 2011.
