The List: 5 famous casualties

As the series turns 25, we take a look at five famous faces who started out in Holby General

Amanda Redman (1993) Long before the ratings juggernaut that is New Tricks, Redman appeared in an episode directed by Michael Brayshaw, who also directed Robson Green in Soldier Soldier. Fact.

Kate winslet (1993) In one of her first TV roles (another was Russell T Davies’s children’s sci-fi series Dark Season) Winslet played fretful Suzanne, which no doubt prepared her for almost drowning in Titanic, looking sad in a cardigan in Mildred Pierce, and winning an Oscar for The Reader.

Minnie Driver (1991) Before she decamped to Hollywood, Will and Grace and The Riches, Driver was admitted to Casualty with a bump on the head. Which may explain her accepting a role in BBC1’s The Deep.

Robson Green (1989—92) Before Being Human and Waterloo Road, before Extreme Fishing, before Wire in the Blood and Touching Evil, before even Robson and Jerome’s pop music career and Soldier Soldier, Green played porter Jimmy Powell.

Brenda Fricker (1986—90) Matronly Megan Roach traded Holby’s bedpans and sutures for the best supporting actress Oscar in 1989 for My Left Foot. Megan returned to Casualty in 1998 for Charlie’s wedding, in 2007 for a Red Nose Day special, and finally in 2010 when, terminally ill, she took her own life.
