Hollywood icon Laurence Fishburne is leaving CSI: Crime Scene Investigation more than two years after stepping in to replace William Petersen in the show’s main role.
According to various reports, the Matrix star elected not to renew his contract, and will likely return to full-time film-making.
The shake-up comes following declining ratings over the programme’s last two seasons and a move from the show’s Thursday night slot on CBS to one late in the evening on Wednesdays.
A CBS insider is reported as expressing little surprise over the actor’s decision: “Nobody expected him to be on the show for seven years, it’s Laurence Fishburne.”
It is understood that series executives are hunting for his replacement for the show’s next series, which is due to kick off in the autumn.
Fishburne will appear next in Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming action thriller, Contagion.
