Our Score
Baker Dill (Matthew McConaughey) is the captain of a fishing boat who is drawn into a sinister world of mystery when his ex-wife (Anne Hathaway) appears with a proposition. Tied up in the zaniest of concepts, the star-studded revenge story loses its way in spectacular fashion. Supernatural elements early on give a heavy hint that something is on the horizon, with plenty of lingering shots and foreboding speeches. However, nothing prepares you for a final act that is just plain odd. The award-winning stars fare terribly, offering over-the-top performances fed by corny dialogue. McConaughey seems to be on autopilot, while Hathaway's femme fatale is far from her best work. This may not be entirely their fault, given the outlandish directions the film ends up going in. Starting out as a bland thriller before wading into ludicrous waters, Serenity may be of some interest to those who like their films a little bit bonkers. Sadly, even they may find scant reward for their patience.
