Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Employing mental illness as fodder for horror movies, however unsettling, can produce masterpieces like Psycho and Repulsion. But the sense of exploitation is all too evident in this unpleasant tale of a young baby-sitter terrorised by an escaped lunatic. Ian Bannen jumps through hoops in an effort to make his role convincing but Peter Collinson's formulaic direction reduces him to just another anonymous nutter. As the terrified heroine, Susan George merely alternates between pouting and screaming - a dress rehearsal for her ordeal in Straw Dogs. The cast also includes George Cole and Dennis Waterman, nearly a decade before they teamed up for TV's Minder. Brutal in depiction and implication, undemanding scare-hounds may find this effective in a not-much-else-to-do-on-a-Friday-night kind of way.
