Filmmaker Lucy Cohen spent over three years filming with the West Midlands family, who were left in financial ruin following the death of their father Paul Shanks.

Through home movies and painfully honest interviews, the film follows Paul’s wife and her seven children as they work through their trauma, and try to understand their father’s mental state six years on from his death.

“I can still remember the morning before he died him having come into my room and closed the door, and he just pleaded with me, he told me he had nobody left and that I was his last hope,” one of Paul’s daughters says in the trailer below. “My response to him was, ‘Dad I’ve got to get ready for school’.

“I really wish that I’d just been that little bit older to understand.”

The film will premiere at this year’s London Film Festival, before being released on Netflix on 13th October. Tickets for the London Film Festival event are available now.
