In Season 19, Nikki questions her judgement in a case from her past, a prominent anti-fundamentalist Muslim is murdered and an ex-convict is found murdered in his home.
The regular cast is back; Nikki (Emilia Fox) is putting herself in peril again; it’s more of the same, nothing out of the ordinary. Except, wait… Silent Witness is out of the ordinary, way out. It’s a phenomenon.
The series has been going for 20 years. It still gets audiences of more than eight million. That’s Downton territory. Without ever making much of a dent in the pop-cultural landscape, it’s a wildly popular drama, one that the BBC rarely makes a fuss of, but which is quietly huge.
So not surprisingly, nobody involved is tearing up the formula. For the new two-parter Nikki looks at the death of a DJ who cut his wrists in the bath. Except that the case bears striking similarities to a previous case of hers, and soon she’s creeping anxiously around in a dark place, holding a torch, on her own, with someone out to get her…
