It looks like the next season of Game of Thrones will only have seven episodes

Director Jack Bender says series seven will be shorter than previous runs - contains season six spoilers

You wait a year for a new series of Game of Thrones to come along and then those ten precious episodes of glorious, gory fantasy drama and political manoeuvring just seem to fly by. Well, we may have a bit of bad news for you…

According to director Jack Bender (known for some of the better episodes of Lost and The Sopranos and the man who helmed the heartbreaking Thrones instalment in which we said goodbye to Hodor) next year there will be not ten but just seven episodes…

When asked by VF Hollywood whether he’d be in charge of more episodes in season seven, Bender said “I don’t know the answer to that,” before adding “they’re only doing seven [episodes], and they’ve got their regulars who have done it forever.”

As disturbing as it is, that would fit with what showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss have hinted at in the past when they told Variety “I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We’re heading into the final lap. That’s the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that’s what we’re looking at.”

Seven episodes? Just seven? And they say George RR Martin is cruel…
