Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This straightforward and uncritical feature-length documentary charts the rise and, to a far lesser extent, the fall of footballer Paul Gascoigne, the sports maverick who hit the heights, then was brought low by a killer combination of bad luck, booze and, though it's not mentioned, bad company. Combining archive match footage with new interviews with Gascoigne himself, England captain Wayne Rooney, manager José Mourinho and TV pundit Gary Lineker, Jane Preston's film presents a telling portrait of a decent and likeable man who ultimately was too emotionally immature to cope with the twin pressures of fame and fortune. Though stagey in its use of interviewees, and perhaps too sympathetic towards its subject, Gascoigne is nonetheless watchable by all. But it's soccer fans who'll patently get the biggest kick out of it.
