Our Score
James Gunn has done the double. Three years after turning bottom-tier comic-book characters into one of the biggest cinematic successes Marvel Studios has ever seen, the writer/director has repeated the trick with this funny and surprisingly soulful second adventure. The spacefaring Guardians are back with a new purpose - taking jobs from conceited golden aliens - until an unwise move sees them thrown across the galaxy and left at their lowest ebb yet. Battling foes through a series of imaginative action set pieces, the team must overcome their differences to save the universe, while Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) finally meets his enigmatic alien father Ego (Kurt Russell). Terrific visual creativity, convincing emotional arcs and a toe-tapping 1980s soundtrack make this one of the Marvel Universe's worthiest and most original sequels, building on the success of the 2014 blockbuster while not relying on repetition of its beats for success. A few flat gags and dodgy new characters aside, it's a galactic triumph.

After saving Xandar from Ronan's wrath, intergalactic outlaws Peter Quill (AKA Star-Lord), Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot and Rocket Raccoon are recognised as heroes. Now, they must fight to stay together as they unravel the mystery surrounding Ego, a man who claims to be Quill's father. Writer/director James Gunn's follow up to his 2014 blockbuster, which reunites Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan and Dave Bautista, with support from Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone and Pom Klementieff. Bradley Cooper also provides the voice of Rocket and Vin Diesel is Groot.
