This Christmas, Call the Midwife is back!

In spite of only having one six-episode series so far, the tear-jerking drama about a group of midwives in 1950s East London already feels like a TV staple.

Set in 1957, the first series of Call the Midwife saw newly qualified midwife Jenny arrive at a convent of midwives. At first daunted by her new life, she began to settle into the poverty-stricken London as the heart-warming series unfolded.

But the BBC1 drama, which stars Jessica Raine, Miranda Hart, Pam Ferris and Vanessa Redgrave, isn't all cosy viewing. As well as being funny and uplifting, Call the Midwife has its gritty and shocking moments too.

The Christmas edition promises to be just as good as ever. Earlier in the year executive producer Pippa Harris said of the Christmas special: "As the nights draw in and Christmas approaches, the residents of Nonnatus House pull together to celebrate the season in their own very special way. Christmas celebrates one particular birth, and so it's especially fitting for BBC1 to pay a visit to these much-loved characters, whose daily lives revolve around the joys and tribulations of childbirth."

A second series of the show will air in 2013.

Call the Midwife Christmas Special is on Christmas Day at 7:30pm on BBC1
