Now we know that this is the final series, we should savour all the little things that make Merlin such fun to watch: King Arthur summoning his servant to help him with life’s challenges such as pulling on a sock, Morgana flouncing for Britain, and Gaius shooting one of those looks that would wither an oak.
It also gives the writers something to work towards — Merlin’s vision of the king’s murder by Mordred begins to look even more ominous. And it’s Mordred we should watch tonight, as he finds himself in a terrible dilemma.
It’s a huge tribute to Merlin that the show has held its nerve in a later slot, repelling the X Factor with a slash of Excalibur here and a blast of dragon-fire there.
