Episode 2: This Way Up

Summary

Aine and Richard try to move their relationship forward in the bedroom but things get a little awkward as they try to hide what they are doing from his housekeeper Marcia. Shona attempts to regain her friendly working relationship with Charlotte, and goes shopping for wedding dresses - with Mammy offering advice over the phone.

Review

Aisling Bea writes spot-on, very funny scenes of stilted awfulness. Tonight, there’s a lovely one revolving around the very specific awkwardness between Shona (Sharon Horgan) and business partner Charlotte (Indira Varma).

They had an affair in series one but now Charlotte has received a save-the-date card for Shona’s wedding and Shona thinks she is “in a snot” about it, though the fact they have to work this through in Shona’s office while her hearing-impaired assistant, who can lip-read, looks in doesn’t make it any easier: they end up speaking through their hands like football managers.

Meanwhile, Aine (Bea) has a lunchtime love-tryst that also turns complicated – in another scene dotted with unexploded mines. It’s a comedy that packs in more acute observation in its 25 minutes than most whole series. And it’s not afraid to take the comedy below the belt…

Review

Have you ever heard of jamais vu? It’s essentially the opposite of déjà vu, in that we experience something familiar but in an unexpected way. And this phenomenon is certainly affecting Malcolm tonight, what with dad Martin suddenly being at home playing happy families with the rest of the Whitlys while someone else who our profiler counts as a friend languishes in chains.

Revealing why we’re being treated to this surreal and inventive “what if?” scenario would be too much of a spoiler, but don’t go thinking that the format twist stints on the mystery-solving, as there’s still a killer to catch. In this case, one who’s stabbed their victim through the eyes with a ball-bearing compass.
