Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss and Merlin star Colin Morgan play the fool at Kevin Spacey gala

Stars of the stage and screen paid tribute and posed for silly pictures as Spacey stepped down as artistic director of the Old Vic...

Kevin Spacey, like Frank Underwood, has a lot of people who want to celebrate his career. Unlike his House of Cards Machiavellian, Spacey doesn’t have to twist their arm to make them turn up.

On Sunday night, celebrity guests arrived in their droves at a party to celebrate Spacey’s tenure as artistic director of the Old Vic theatre in London.

Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss got his hands on actor Colin Morgan. Bizarrely, the Merlin star doesn’t look too worried.

Gatiss loved this next one so much he made it his new Twitter profile pic. We’d still prefer a Sherlock photobomb.

Hugh Bonneville, looking every bit the Downton Abbey gent, led the onstage tributes to Spacey as he stepped down as Old Vic artistic director after 11 years.

But even Lord Grantham couldn’t resist striking a pose in the after party.

His on-screen partner Elizabeth McGovern was also in attendance. The pair are due to begin filming the final series of Downton Abbey imminently. Bonneville’s already said there will be tears.

And then, of course, there was the man himself, Kevin Spacey – looking a little choked up as he delivered his farewell speech.

(Stunning lapel pin by the way)

But by the time the wine was flowing backstage, he had definitely cheered up – and if you want proof of where his allegiances really lie, let’s hope the socks give the game away.
