The news has hit us like a ton of brightly coloured bricks, but it’s looking like Ben Affleck’s upcoming portrayal of Batman might have a rival – one about three centimetres high and made of plastic.
2017 will see a feature length film based around the adventures of ‘Lego Batman’, as voiced by Will Arnett in this year’s smash hit The Lego Movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Watch a clip of him in action below.
Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and the book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, will script the film with Arnett returning to offer the gravelly tones of the mini caped crusader (though no word on whether he’ll continue to offer thrash metal vocals this time).
Any fans holding out for The Lego Movie 2 will have to wait a while longer, with the Batman spin-off looking like it will supplant the sequel’s release date, as well as signing its planned director Chris McKay.
Lego Batman was the breakout character of The Lego Movie and has also featured in three video games and straight-to-video film Lego Batman: The Movie – DC Super Heroes Unite.
And no matter how good or bad this film is, you know that the tie-in Lego Batmobile is going to be amazing.
The next Lego film, Ninjago, is due for release in Autumn 2016
