First look at Mark Gatiss in Mapp and Lucia

The Sherlock star plays retired Army Major Benji Flint in the adaptation of EF Benson's comedy novels

Mark Gatiss sports a wonderful waxed moustache and a stern expression in this first look at his new character in BBC1’s Mapp and Lucia.

Gatiss plays irascible Raj Army veteran Major Benji Flint in Steve Pemberton’s adaptation of EF Benson’s humorous period novels, which star Miranda Richardson and Anna Chancellor as the eponymous social rivals Miss Elizabeth Mapp and Mrs Emmeline “Lucia” Lucas.

Following the annoucment of his casting last month, Gatiss said “EF Benson’s tales of life in Tilling are some of the most sly, funny and waspishly brilliant stories in the language. It’s an absolute treat to be joining my old friend Steve and such a glorious cast to bring them to life. Quai hai!”

Mapp and Lucia comes to BBC1 this summer.
