The BBC have found a new Poldark – Being Human and The Hobbit actor Aidan Turner.
The actor will play Ross Poldark in writer Debbie Horsfield’s reimagining of Winston Graham’s historical romance novels.
“He is a brilliant actor who is part of the BBC family,” said Ben Stephenson, the controller of BBC drama commissioning. “We are excited he is coming back from Hollywood.”
The original adaptation of Poldark aired for two series on the BBC between 1975 and 1977. It starred Robin Ellis in the title role as British officer Ross Poldark, who returns to his native Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War in the late 18th century.
The new series of six hour-long episodes will probably air next year.
It is expected to remain true to the romantic saga, focusing on Poldark’s return to a much changed home life with his father now dead and his wife engaged to his cousin.
