Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom will be shown at the iconic landmark on Thursday, when Obama will be joined by the film’s leads, British actors Idris Elba and Naomie Harris, as well as the daughters of Nelson Mandela himself, Zindzi and Zenani.

Of the special event, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company, Harvey Weinstein, said: “Knowing what a strong relationship President Obama has with President Mandela, it’s an honor for this film to be shown at the White House.”

The awards season contender chronicles Mandela’s life, from his childhood to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa, via the 27 years he spent behind bars.

The film is directed by Justin Chadwick, and also stars Terry Pheto, Jamie Bartlett and Tony Kgoroge.
