Daniela Nardini to join Waterloo Road as “dangerous” new teacher

The star of This Life and The Fades will play a "maverick" addition to the school staff

When term resumes at Waterloo Road secondary school next year, the pupils will have a new member of staff to contend with. Daniela Nardini – known to those of a certain age as Anna from cult BBC2 twentysomething drama This Life – will play a “passionate, driven but maverick” teacher with her own particular approach to inspiring her pupils.

The actress – last seen as a ghost-busting vicar in BBC3’s Bafta-winning supernatural drama The Fades – described her character Esther as “mildly dangerous with the potential to get more so,” adding “she is passionate about her cause, but unfortunately doesn’t know how to encourage and promote her views without getting carried away.”

What exactly Esther’s particlular “cause” is remains to be seen but Nardini’s history of engaging performances as strong women suggests she’ll bring something special to the role.

Cameron Roach, the show’s executive producer, said: “We’re very excited to welcome Daniela to the ensemble of Waterloo Road. Daniela has earned a terrific reputation for playing memorable characters, and we’re looking forward to her breathing life into Esther.”

Filming on the third instalment of series eight of Waterloo Road is currently under way on location in Greenock, Scotland. It will air on BBC1 next year.
